My english teacher had THE SAME THEORY. He said that pretty much all the teen movies from the 80s were at two high schools in the burbs of Chi.
Your English teacher was right and on to something, but he didn’t pull on the string hard enough; had he done so, he would’ve seen that every John Hughes flick was in the same universe, and most teenagers attended Shermer High. Here, let me give a couple of examples:
- In National Lampoon’s Vacation (written by Hughes) Rusty (played by Anthony Michael Hall) makes a quip about looking cool when he gets to attend Shermer High. Which is interesting when you think about it, because Rusty would’ve been the same age as both Brian (The Breakfast Club) AND Gary (Weird Science). Which is even more interesting than the Molly Ringwald thing: THREE guys who look alike, but act totally different?
- Also, there was this girl in Elgin, IL who kinda looked like Samantha (16 Candles) and Claire (The Breakfast Club). Hm.
- Question: out of the 5 members of the breakfast club, who do you think was worried about Ferris the most, seeing as he attended Shermer High as well?
- Guess what high school Buzz (Home Alone) attended? Also, go back and watch Home Alone again: the part where Kevin is sneaking into Buzz’s room to get his stash, there’s a ‘Save Ferris’ poster on the wall.
I would keep going but I think if I think harder on this, my brain will explode. OH, one final nugget to chew on: Jennifer Lopez’s character in Maid In Manhattan (which was a story by Mr. Hughes)? Take a WILD GUESS what high school she says she attended when she’s walking in the park with Chris (Ralph Fiennes) and her son…
